Description of Galerie Huit Arles

Galerie Huit Arles is situated in a late 17th century mansion, in the historical town centre of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Arles, France. Founded in 2007 by author, curator and heritage conservationist, Julia de Bierre, the gallery hosts exhibitions, artists, and guests from around the world.

Photographs, paintings, sculptures are displayed in the unusual salon settings of this atmospheric exhibition and residential space. As well as a regular exhibition programme, and distinguished private views, the gallery hosts residencies and workshops for artists and writers.

Since 2007 the gallery has built a solid reputation for its careful selection of artists – both established and emerging – and the quality and originality of its hangings or installations. Exhibitions are mounted either independently or in collaboration. Partners have included: The Victoria & Albert Museum, London, Taschen Books, Editions Gallimard, City Hall Kuala Lumpur , Alliance Française and Galerie SIT DOWN, Paris.

More than just an art space, Galerie Huit Arles is a creative, inspirational and convivial venue in a magnificent setting. Galerie Huit is located centrally in the beautiful, historic French city of Arles, in the heart of the region of Provence. The gallery is minutes walking distance from Roman monuments, Renaissance palaces, religious edifices, world-class art museums, the LUMA Foundation and neighbouring contemporary galleries.

Arles is home to numerous art festivals and events throughout the year, including:

• Les Rencontres d’Arles
• Les Suds
• Arles Contemporain
• Octobre Numérique

Arles has been the inspiring setting for many artists, including Pablo Picasso, photographer Lucien Clergue and Vincent Van Gogh, who created over 300 works here. Today, the important LUMA Foundation is attracting other private initiatives, making Arles one of Europe’s most dynamic cultural hubs.

Objective of the “Résidence Arlésienne” for a Malaysian Artist

The residency is designed to offer an opportunity to familiarise oneself with Arles art scene and cultural environment and to be immersed in the world capital city of photography. Resident is expected to complete a project during their stay. During the stay, the artist in residence will be made familiar with the art scene and cultural environment. Activities on offer include visits at galleries, studios and museums.

Working space :

An Inner city location in a Unesco World Heritage site means that this residency is not suitable for creating huge-scale work or work that produces noise or pollution.
Galerie Huit’s financial support does not extend to materials, paid external manpower or artist lab. The gallery can, however, provide a warm bi-lingual welcome, professional advice and useful introductions when needed. Galerie Huit is also a member of Arles Contemporain , the network of museums and established gallerys in Arles, and of ResArtis , the international network for artist’s residencies.

Exhibition space:

The gallery is comprised of several spaces, of varying sizes and styles.
Normally Galerie Huit’s resident artists wish to concentrate solely on exploring and developing their creative potential during their stay, combined with visits to places nearby of outstanding cultural interest, and eventually the possibility of an informal exhibition at the end, case by cases basis. If an exhibition is organised it could take place at Galerie Huit exhibition spaces, in a venue provided by the Ville d’Arles, in the context of the proposed partnership and possibly in a group show, or in Malaysia. A possible exhibition will need the approval of the selection committee of the Residence.
