Institut Pondok Perancis in Kuala Lumpur
Institut Pondok Perancis is set to officially launch this Friday, 26th May with the aim to promote academic, scientific and cultural exchanges between France and Malaysia. This French research centre is dedicated to the social sciences in Malaysia.
The word Pondok means small lodging shelter or a hut. But it has been used synonymously as a melting pot for the exchange of knowledge in Malaysia. This is because pupils used to live in ‘huts’ close to the place where they get their education. Eventually the pondok became the open space for intellectual discourse.
Perancis means France or French.
Therefore, the Institut Pondok Perancis in Kuala Lumpur is a place of scientific exchange and residence for researchers from both countries.
The idea for this research centre was conceived in summer 2016 with the ambition to promote the circulation of knowledge and to strengthen intellectual expertise by supporting field research, translation and publication, as well as organising conferences.
The centre will also be hosting archives and collections of scientific and literary work on Malaysia and Southeast Asia.
Institut Pondok Perancis is located at 80 Jalan Rotan, Kampung Attap, Kuala Lumpur.
